TIRRC Condemns President Trump’s Deployment of National Guard Troops to

Memphis

MEMPHIS— Earlier today, the news broke that President Trump would be sending the National Guard into Memphis. These ongoing intrusions into cities across the country is another way President Trump is using propaganda to take away power from our neighborhoods and communities.

Lisa Sherman Luna, Executive Director of Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) offered the following statement in response, saying,

”The people of Memphis didn't ask for federal troops to patrol their streets
. They didn't consent to having their city occupied by the National Guard. Yet once again, we're seeing federal leaders seize power from local communities, using lies as an excuse to invade our cities. This started in June in LA and President Trump continues to use immigrants and lies about crime as scapegoats to expand his control in our cities.

As Tennesseans we must stand up and say "no" to this abuse of power from President Trump. We will not allow federal leaders to use our cities as testing grounds for authoritarian control. At TIRRC we believe that together we have the collective power to reclaim control over our own lives and our own communities. Because when we stand together, we are stronger than those who want to take away our freedom, our power, and our joy. “
