Trump killed DACA on September 5th, 2017. Since then, over 22,000 immigrant youth have lost their work permits and protections from deportation. Trump cruelly created a crisis and then fabricated a March 5th deadline for Congress to fix it.
Today that deadline is here, and Congress has failed to act to protect immigrant youth.
For the past six months, immigrant youth have fearlessly led the fight for a permanent solution that protects their future without harming their families or other immigrant communities. Over the weekend, TIRRC youth members led a protest in Chattanooga, and today, they are in D.C. rallying with thousands of their peers and allies across the country. They are demanding Congress act by passing a #DreamActNow.
This afternoon, TIRRC youth leader, Carlos, put his body on the line in an act of civil disobedience and was arrested in D.C. (watch here). Carlos and hundreds of immigrant youth are demanding that Congress pass a #DreamActNow.
Immigrant youth deserve more than a future of uncertainty and fear. They cannot continue to live deadline to deadline.
Congress has another opportunity to act. Right now, they are in negotiations for the Fiscal Year 2018 omnibus appropriations. These talks are already underway and may be completed by March 23rd, giving Congress another chance to do what’s right and vote for a permanent solution for Dreamers. Your member of Congress needs to hear from you now about the urgency to include a Dream Act in the omnibus package.
