This is an all hands on deck moment. By next Friday, Congress needs to pass the Dream Act. We've been asking a lot of you lately, but this is a crisis.
Since Trump terminated the DACA program in September, more than 11,700 recipients have lost their protections. Over the next two weeks, another 2,000 young immigrants will lose DACA. We can't wait longer.
Right now, congressional leadership is negotiating how to pass a year-end spending deal and other "must-pass" bills. They need to hear loud and clear from their constituents that Congress must pass the Dream Act by the end of the year.
Dozens of Democrats (including Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen) have publicly declared that they won't vote for a budget deal if it doesn't include protections for DACA recipients. 34 House Republicans recently sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan calling on Congress to pass legislation to protect DACA recipients by the end of the year.
As House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader McConnell, and Minority Leaders Schumer and Pelosi negotiate on what to include in the year-end deal and what bills will come to the floor, they need to hear from our members of Congress.
Can you take a few minutes to call members of the Tennessee delegation and ask them to join their colleagues in calling for the Dream Act by the end of the year?
"My name is (your name) and I'm calling from (your city). I'm calling to urge my representative to support the Dream Act and to tell congressional leadership that protections for DACA recipients must be included in any year-end deal. Immigrant youth in Tennessee can't wait any longer, we need a clean Dream Act by Christmas."
We need Tennessee's senators and representatives to stand up for the more than 8,300 DACA recipients in our state by demanding that the Dream Act be included in any year-end deal.
