The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is at immediate risk and undocumented youth are in the fight of their lives. DACA has been a lifeline allowing more than 8,000 young adults in Tennessee the opportunity to more fully participate in our communities, by granting temporary deportation relief and a work permit. Canceling the DACA program would have detrimental effects on immigrant families, our communities, and our economy.

Our current moment: Because of the callous actions of the Tennessee Attorney General and 9 other extremist AGs, the DACA program is under immediate threat and my family’s future is at risk.

Recognizing the very real danger that the DACA program is in, a bi-partisan group of Senators filed a new version of the Dream Act on Thursday, which would provide more permanent protection and a pathway to citizenship for many undocumented youth. We’ll fight for the Dream Act, but we need to protect DACA, too.

Throughout August we need to mobilize a massive movement of DACA recipients and the thousands of our teachers, employers, friends, and neighbors that support us. Over the next month, we’ll be sharing tools and resources for you to help us build and show support for DACA and invite you to join us and take actions at key moments.

About DACA: Established in 2012, DACA has been one of the country’s most successful and popular immigration initiatives. DACA allows the opportunity for recipients to more fully participate in our communities and contribute to our economic growth. DACA grants a 2-year renewable work permit and temporary relief from deportation to certain undocumented individuals who entered the country as children. DACA recipients are registered with the federal government and passed strict criminal and education background checks. Over 8,000 Tennesseans have applied for DACA and thousands more could qualify if the program continues. Nationwide more than 800,000 young adults have DACA.
